Event Details
As one of the few musicians in the world actively composing and
performing on the rare harpguitar, Dan Lavoie is bringing a unique
sound and texture to fans of acoustic music. The music Dan produces has
deep basses and well-executed melody lines.” Bob Makin from Relics
Magazine says “Dan’s soaring execution will drop the jaws of
unsuspecting acoustic music fans and impress those familiar with this
young man’s chops!” Reminiscent of Michael Hedges and Richie Havens,
Dan’s music is sophisticated and compelling. In the last few years, Dan
has toured extensively all over the U.S. and has performed
internationally with stops in the United Kingdom. Dan has opened for
and shared the stage with Vance Gilbert, The Dave Brubeck Quartet,
Muriel Anderson, Cliff Eberhardt, Dickey Betts, Levon Helm and many
more. Also appearing will be Port O’Monkeys, who perform acoustic music
with both Spanish and Middle Eastern influences.
Also appearing will be Port O’Monkeys, who play a spicy and eclectic
mix of traditional and original music from around the Mediterranean,
Spain, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Chris Wertenbaker
(guitar, oud, bouzouki, kanun, rebab) Jeff Greene (mandolin, yayla
tambur, bouzouki, nykleharpa, rebab) Don Hayward (trombone, guitarone,
harmonium) and Paul Harris (flute), have played together for decades in
various combinations, and are often joined by guest artists. Port
O'Monkeys uses a wide variety of acoustic instruments, including
flamenco guitar, steel string guitar, oud, kanun, bouzouki, guitarrone,
yayla tanbur, violin, flute, harmonium, bass trombone, mandolin, afghan
rebab, nyckleharpe, konkovka, dutar, and various hand drums and other
percussion. In each song, they carefully mix the aural timbres to bring
out its unique character. The interpretations of traditional pieces and
the original compositions take their inspiration from sources as
diverse as Flamenco, American folk, Basque, Celtic, ancient Greek,
Yemeni, Afghani, Turkish, Armenian, Hindustani, Klezmer, Persian, and
Gypsy. The group uses odd meters of 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15 as well
as 3/4 and 4/4. Evocative lyrics in several languages are featured in
some of the songs to complement the mix. The common denominator is a
shared musical spirit, a sense of integrity and common humanity and
aspiration that translates into a joy that the musicians radiate and
the audience feels. The band is named after the town at the base of the
mountain in René Daumal’s book Mount Analogue.
